Katherine Engel Public Administration and Policy (PhD)

Katie is a PhD candidate in the Department of Public Administration & Policy. Her research interests include socioeconomic disparities in wellbeing and the role of the social safety net in their reduction. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Adolescent Health, Maternal and Child Health Journal, Nutrients, and The Conversation. She is the recipient of a 2023 award from the Research Innovation and Development Grants in Economics (RIDGE) Partnership, the 2023 Charles H. Levine Doctoral Student Research Award, and the 2023 Gill Family Foundation Award. In conjunction with her PhD, Katie served as a Mathematica Summer Fellow studying the effect of SNAP on mental health. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked as Director of Prospect Research at the University of Notre Dame. She also served as an AmeriCorps VISTA and worked on expanding SNAP use at farmers' markets.
